The Minneapolis city council manages over 10 million dollars of federal funding allocated for community development. The council will hear public comment on November 29th at 6pm before passing the 2018 budget for these funds. Blexit is working in partnership with northside organizations to urge city council to prioritize funds for community development by and for the Black community.

Our priorities are to:
  • Require current and future recipients to report on their programs effectiveness in reversing economic disparities. We know our current economic challenges stem from the horrific disparities ripping our communities apart, we are asking the council to add the reversal of economic disparities (RED) as measurement of program success.
  • Activate section 108 of CDBG which allows the council to leverage up to 5 times the fund amount for development projects. Section 108 has been used in urban metro areas similar to Minneapolis' demographic but our council has never exercised this option. With our dire equity disparity, we believe it is long past time our council deployed section 108 to invest in the Black community and the Northside.
  • Prioritize homelessness prevention and transitional housing for homeless youth, families and adults. Homeless exists on the Northside without any infrastructure to address housing needs including homeless to housing transitional programs. We are asking the council to invest in homelessness prevention and transitional housing programs that usher homeless youth and families into permanent healthy housing.

Please join us at City Hall and let city council members know that we need more CDBG funds invested in the Black community and the Northside.
